Quitters Day Isn’t For Quitters?
It’s always too soon to quit!
Norman Vincent Peale
Today is officially Quitters Day.
Before today I didn’t even have an inkling that such day exists, but that’s true for a lot of the days featured in the #CelebrateEveryDay category. Every single day I get to look through listings for several competing “holidays”. Some are real holidays celebrated the world over, but most are not like that at all. Some of the holidays are quite dry and serious while others are extremely light and cheery. Some are just silly.
I’ve been trying to select holidays that are relevant to me as a hiker, backpacker and outdoorsman. Some days that is easy, so there may be several competing topics that could be relevant. Some days the pickings are kind of slim, I can usually turn something into the day’s topic. At least I’ve been able to do that for the first 10 days of January.
Can you tell I made a News Years resolution to write more? To try to write something every day?
I have a resolution this year, even though I don’t particularly find resolutions compelling. I’m trying to write every day, or at least write enough to have posts for every day. Some days I can write up two or three days worth of posts, and some days I struggle to write anything at all. That’s the part I’m working to change, the days I struggle to write anything at all – that needs to change.
Why? Because writers write! That’s why!
The easiest mistake to make is to lose sight of your goal. Failure is temporary, but quitting is permanent. Choose wisely.

Getting Over Quitting on Quitters Day?

Musicians don’t retire; they stop when there’s no more music in them.
Louis Armstrong
I haven’t quit so far this year, so is it true I don’t need Quitters Day yet? This may be the part that gets confusing, Quitters Day isn’t for quitters, instead it’s a day to celebrate not quitting. Confused yet? You’ve got good company, monster is frantically scribbling on his scorecard.
Quitters Day celebrates…
Quitter’s Day is held on the second Friday in January. This year, it falls on January 12. The tradition of setting New Year’s resolutions began some 4,000 years ago with the ancient Babylonians. For them, the year did not begin in January but in mid-March — on the first moon after the spring equinox. Quitter’s Day is set aside to recognize those who set new year goals and fail to achieve them — and to encourage and equip them to try again and ultimately succeed.
So quitters day is about not quitting, well except when it’s not not about quitting. Gotcha!
What’s New in 2024? – Quitters Day Version
Failure is respectable. Quitting is not. If you have worked hard and failed after giving every effort to make use of the opportunities available—so be it. At least you fought with all your might to make it otherwise. That is deserving of respect.

Pretty much everything is new here. The blog still has that new blog smell, so to speak. Monster made a couple of different resolutions for 2024, and he hasn’t quit anything yet. Not yet…
Do I believe he can fulfil his dreams? Damn straight I do, he’s got this! Let’s hope Monster never needs to celebrate Quitters Day again…
Well… Of course, except for when he does…

The Final Words for Quitters…….Day
One of the biggest lessons I learned that day is that anybody can quit; people quit all the time, and no one thinks very highly of them for doing it. Only real champions and people of character and strength keep going past the point of wanting to give up. Only real champions cross the finish line when they are completely worn out. But that’s where the rewards are.

Everyday I go to physical therapy I get stronger. Everytime I workout at home, I get stronger. I want to walk more, I need to walk more. I want to write more, I need to write more. That pretty well sums this year up.
Last year I wanted to camp more, at new locations. We made it to some wonderful places, and we never got close to leaving the Midwest. I think we camped close to six weeks total, it was glorious. Last year feels like a good start, this year I want more still.
There are some potentially life altering trips to take with my wife and my son. And all that’s just planned in the first 6 months of the year. Oh boy, this is going to get good.
Are you sure you want to quit? All unsaved progress will be lost.
