It’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day 1/14/24

Buddy the Wonder Dog Loves His Outfits

Apparently, today is National Dress Up Your Pet Day.

I’d say this topic is a real stretch for a blog about hiking and backpacking, but you don’t know Buddy the Wonder Dog! He’s been our camping and hiking companion for the last year, he loves the outdoors, for sure! He took to camping like a pig to slop, Buddy was in his own element outdoors.

The last time we went camping he had his own duffle bag for clothing, just like me! Some doggies don’t have any clothes at all, mine needs his own closet. I’m not saying he’s spoiled, but he’s got coats, he has sweaters, there’s a rain jacket, he has a Minnesota Vikings t-shirt, and he even has his own life jacket!

I’d go so far as to say he’s a clothes horse, if he wasn’t a Wonder Dog!

I figure there are several ways to ‘dress up’ your pet. There’s dressing your pet in a funny manner like superhero bulldog with a cape. And then there’s dressing for the weather, like girl does with Buddy, she makes sure he’s comfortable no matter when we are camping.

And then there’s dressing your pet into shirts and clothing of our favorite sports teams, that’s fun too. Some critters even get dressed up for television, if you don’t believe me you can ask Alligator Loki.

Dogs are likely the easiest pets to dress up, at least that’s what my mind’s telling me. I’m not sure about cats, I’ve been allergic to them my whole life, so as long as they leave me alone I like cats! Ha!

I suppose if you had a pet sloth it would be easier to dress than an alligator. With that said, I’m no Joe Exotic for sure, so for us non-exotic pet owners I’m figuring that dogs are the way to go.

I was reading the short list of suggested activities for Dress Up Your Pet Day, and the third one left me rolling with laughter.

If you have kids, but no pets, dress them up instead. The FOMO doesn’t have to be real. If you don’t have pets, you can dress up your children instead!

Oh I can understand playing dress up with your kids, no problem there. But to specifically shoot your family (on film) instead of pets for Dress Up Your Pet Day? That’s kind of a stretch, isn’t it? Of course, when I asked girl if she thought it was appropriate to play dress up with your kids for Dress Up Your Pet Day, she replied, “Well ya!” so I just might be in the minority here.

I was surprised to learn there was a even a Facebook group for National Dress Up Your Pet Day with 1.4k followers, but it hasn’t had a post for 2023, or 2024, so it doesn’t actually appear to be active.

Oh! Don’t bother to visit https://www.dressupyourpetday.com/. In one of the oddities that occasionally grow out of search engine optimization and today’s internet, that site is actually about Real Estate in Singapore!

I’m pretty sure this guy worked with me at the Grand Canyon…girl thinks I need new glasses!

Monsters Are Not Pets – National Dress Up Your Pet Day

“Monsters are not pets.”

I just looked at girl and made that simple statement. “Monsters are not pets.” Of course, girl disagreed with me.

She said, “But I give Monster Pets.”

I’m not quite sure what to think about that, once she’s put it that way. If you receive pets, does that make you a pet? I thought only people wore clothes, but obviously that’s wrong too.

What’s a Monster to do?
